Virtual Race Night in aid of Hertfordshire Action on Disability’s Golden Anniversary:  The Best of WGC is organising what promises to be a fun evening in aid of Hertfordshire Action on Disability’s Golden Anniversary. It’s a “Virtual Race Night” and it’s taking place at Woodhall Community Hall, Mill Green Rd in Welwyn Garden City on Friday September 5th from 7 -11pm.  HAD and the best of are hoping everyone will get in the spirit on the night – there’s a Licensed Bar all evening - Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed filly and stallion - Plus bottles of champagne to all winning owners.   TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE and you can book a table for up to 10 people by calling the HAD hotline on 01707 324581 – Credit Card Bookings Accepted

The next event is the fund-raising Charity Dinner/Dance to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Hertfordshire Action on Disability. It will take place on Saturday, 13th September, 2008 at Broxbourne Civic Hall, which is in High Street, Hoddesdon. 6.00pm for 6.30pm through until 12.30am. There will be a good five-course meal, followed by three hours of dancing to Todd Miller and the Joe Loss Orchestra and Singers. There will be a half-hour break after each of the first two hours of dancing. Tickets cost £40 each and are available from 01707 320199, 01727 858605, H.A.D. (01707 324581), and Broxbourne Civic Hall (01992 441946).

The menu is:- melon with prawns and Marie Rose sauce; Stilton and celery soup with croutons; breast of chicken stuffed with asparagus and wrapped in Parma ham, with chef's selection of vegetables; fresh tropical fruit salad in kirsch with brandied cream; cheese board with celery and grapes; tea/coffee and mints. Special dietary requirements can be met if sufficient notice is given.

There will be music through Dinner played by the Orchestra's pianist.

The Joe Loss Orchestra is Britain's (if not the world's) longest running entertainment unit, having been formed by Joe in September, 1930, and they have worked continuously ever since. They have never been broken up, then reformed. Joe himself died in 1990, but when he became ill he handed control of the Orchestra to his singer, Todd Miller, who continues to lead the Orchestra. Obviously no original member of the Orchestra is still playing, but most of the current Orchestra had joined before Joe gave up the baton. They have made countless records, radio and T.V. appearances, and toured throughout the British Isles and abroad. They are still the Orchestra of choice when the Queen holds dances at Buckingham Palace. Since September, 1938 their famous signature tune has been "In the Mood". Everything they do is "live"; nothing is mimed or pre-recorded. The members of the Orchestra are a permanent unit (unlike other top orchestras where the musicians are session musicians who come together for a gig when they have no other engagements) and this unity and cohesion shows in their performances. They don't just play music - they entertain.

At the Dance, every table will seat a maximum of twelve people, and we will try to fill every table. Dress is Dinner Suit or Lounge Suit.

During the reception period, people will be able to get drinks at the cash bar, order any wine they might wish to drink during dinner, and hopefully, buy tombola tickets. We hope to sit down for the meal between 6.30pm and 6.45pm at the latest. Dancing should commence at 8.30pm until 9.30pm. There will then be a 30 minute break during which raffle tickets will be sold, and at 10pm another hour's dancing. Another 30 minute break will follow during which the raffle will be drawn, then at 11.30pm the final hour's dancing will begin. The evening finishes at 12.30am. Even people who do not dance like to come to a Joe Loss dance because not only are the Orchestra and Singers good to listen to - they are good to watch as well.

I hope this information is of some use to you, Edna. Thanks for your help. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Best wishes,

Ralph

A Big Thank You : Jazz on the Island 2008

Yet another amazing success for Jazz on the island. A big thank you to Edna, all the helpers the performers and the public who supported the event. With all the money raised going to HAD the evening only had winners. To view the night , go to Gallery

Message from Edna

I don't have the final figure as yet, but I do know we have made at least £1500, and hope there will be another couple of hundred more, as all the late payments dribble in. It was our fourth Jazz on the Island and a very special one to celebrate HAD's 50th Birthday. As usual the event would never have happened with the support and hard work of my husband Steve, and Bob Pearman. Even my grandchildren were hauled in this year to help with hay making so that the Island could be mown for the event!
We were worried by the weather forecast during the preceding week, however, the day was saved by Sherrardswood School, the Forrow and Owens families who loaned the gazebo's. Special thanks to Sue and Andy Forrow and Julie and John Owens who even came and put their gazebos up! On the night, the weather cleared, warmed up and became pleasant. Lis Meyland-Smith celebrated her 70th  birthday at the event with 50 guests, some of whom had travelled from as far away as Denmark and Malta .As usual the villagers responded magnificently and came along. A good time was had by all, thanks to Bob Thomas and The Thom cats, and Liquorice Allsax for their wonderful performances.

Message from Paul

The weather might have been a bit wet but the music was cool at Welwyn Garden City-based charity  Hertfordshire Action on Disability's¹s fourth annual jazz night on June 21.

Held, as always, in Director Edna Stephens¹s Lemsford Village garden the event attracted over 200 people who enjoyed sparkling sets from the two bands on stage.

Fans tucked into picnics while listening to regulars Bob Thomas and the Thomcats and newcomers Liquorice Allsax.

And even when the rain started falling midway through the evening there were plenty of special HAD umbrellas on hand to shelter under.

Seen doing just that above are event organiser Edna (left), together with HAD helpers Paul Bishop,  Annabelle Waterfield and Margaret McCreadie.

The good-quality golf style umbrellas sport HAD's 50th anniversary logo as well as being in HAD¹s house colours. Priced at £20 each, they are sure to be in demand at the organisation's Terry Stevens Centre and should also prove a hit at HAD¹s Golf Day at Mill Green GC on September 19.

The evening raised over £1500.

Next fundraising events are a dinner dance at Broxbourne Civic Hall on September 13 and the golf day on September 19. More information on 01707324581 or visit www.hadnet.org.uk

A Big Thank You : Easter Egg Hunt 2008

TARA'S SWEET SURPRISE

A family-sized chocolate egg found a good home after a local charity's Easter raffle.

Welwyn Garden City-based Hertfordshire Action on Disability raffled the giant egg at its annual egg hunt on Easter Monday.

The egg, donated by Woolmer Green chocalatier Lessiters, was won by Tara Covill of...Woolmer Green.

After hearing the happy news Tara, partner John Dunn and daughters Morgan, 5 and Sinead, 2, along with grandmother Olive Edwards, picked the egg up from organiser Edna Stephens' Lemsford Village home.

And it took the whole family to lift the 10kg egg!

Over 200 visitors braved snowy weather and helped raise over £600 for HAD, who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. Thanks to all those who attended and also to Natalie Chocolates who donated 300 mini eggs.
